Welcome to Sorrento

My grandmother's favorite place when she visited Italy was Sorrento. Nestled in the Campania region of Italy, Sorrento is a picturesque town that has charmed visitors for centuries. With views that stretch across the Bay of Naples and the iconic outline of Mount Vesuvius in the background, it’s no wonder that Sorrento is a beloved destination for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure. But there's so much more to this enchanting city than meets the eye!

A Brief History of Sorrento

Sorrento's history dates back to ancient Roman times, where it served as a popular retreat for the wealthy. The town boasts a rich heritage, influenced by various civilizations, including the Greeks, who initially established settlements here. You can find remnants of this history in its stunning architecture and quaint streets lined with charming shops and cafes.

One key figure associated with Sorrento is the poet and author Torquato Tasso, who was born here in the 16th century. His works often drew inspiration from the beauty surrounding him, solidifying Sorrento's place in the literary world. Today, you can stroll along the charming streets and feel the echoes of history resonate through time.

Streets, Culture, and Charm

The heart of Sorrento is its winding streets, adorned with vibrant bougainvillea and inviting cafes. As you wander around, you'll discover local artisans selling hand-crafted products, from lemon-infused liqueurs to exquisite ceramics. We were fortunate enough to visit for a few hours and experienced the lively Piazza Tasso, which is a hub of activity, providing a perfect spot to people-watch and soak in the local culture.

Speaking of culture, Sorrento is also famous for its culinary delights. The local cuisine harmoniously blends fresh seafood with the region's signature ingredient, the Sorrento lemon. We only visited for a few hours but our Trafalgar tour guide Lisa, brought us to this little quaint store, Limonoro, where they not only gave us samples but an exquisite taste testing experience of Limoncellos of all kinds, Pistachio Creams, homemade cookies and candies. All which captured the essence of this stunning region.

Sorrento is more than just another Italian city; it’s a delightful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you are wandering through its colorful streets or enjoying the vibrant local flavors, Sorrento promises an unforgettable experience that lingers long after your visit.

The Port: Gateway to the Amalfi Coast

No trip to Sorrento would be complete without a visit to its bustling port. This picturesque harbor is not just the town's lifeblood; it's also a gateway to the Amalfi Coast and nearby islands like Capri and Ischia. Enjoy a stroll along the marina as boats bob in the gentle waves, and take in the stunning sea views that have inspired artists around the world. We set off on a ferry to explore the nearby Isle of Capri (Spoiler Alert)... Stay Tuned for my next blog on Isle of Capri!
